Pop’s Turtle of the Month – Mata Mata Turtle

October 10, 2016
Posted by admin

The Mata Mata turtle (Chelus fimbriata) is a freshwater turtle originating from South America. Primarily living in the Amazon River, these are surely one of the strangest turtles you may ever see.

With appendage-like tentacles on their face, they lie in wait for a fish to pass by their face. As masters of camouflage, they will rely motionless and wait for their prey to appear in front of them. Suddenly, they’ll suck in the water in front of them, trapping the fish into their stomach. Slowly, they will expend the water from their system. This amazing feeding process is know as “suction feeding”.

These turtles live in shallow water, and they’ll use their long necks to reach the surface of the water. They save their energy and walk along the river floors.

These wonderful display turtles can reach up to 18 inches and weigh up to 33 pounds.
