Lizards as Pets by Strictly Reptiles

Lizards are fascinating and beautiful creatures, so when people decide to make lizards as pets it is easy to see why. Not all cold-blooded critters make good household companions, so pay attention to this quick guide to what you need to care for them, feed them, and which ones tend to be good lizards as pets.

Lizards are actually quite varied. Most of them are insectivores, but others can be herbivores or even omnivores. This means that depending on the type of lizard you have, they might need a primarily vegetarian diet, or they might need insects or meat in their diet.

In the wild, lizards might consume:

  • Worms, spiders, beetles, flies, and other insects

  • Other small animals like baby birds, baby mice, or smaller lizards

  • Eggs

  • Fruits and veggies

  • Larger prey, depending on the size of the lizard

It’s common that the lizards that make the best pets are often the insectivorous ones, which is good if you’re not comfortable feeding your pets mice or rats. In fact, most lizards as pets owners feed their lizards crickets, mealworms, or waxworms which are commonly found in pet supply stores. In order to keep them healthy, though, you may want to supplement their diet with other sources of nutrients.

That being said, some of the best lizards you can have as a beginner are Green Basilisk, Caiman Lizard, Gidgee Skink, Green Iguana, African Fire Skink, Gargoyle Gecko, Savannah Monitor, Long-Tailed Lizard, Chameleon, Ackies Monitor, Gold-Dust Day Gecko, Chinese Water Dragon, African Fat-Tailed Gecko, Uromastyx, Argentine Black and White Tegu, Green Anole, Blue-Tongue Skink, Crested Gecko, Leopard Gecko, and Bearded Dragon. Bearded Dragons can often make the best choice for a pet since they are very friendly and love to be handled. While all of these animals need the proper care such as good lighting, a fair amount of space, and temperature control, this list of lizards is great for beginners.

The rule of thumb is picking a pet that already matches your overall lifestyle. For example, if you’re uncomfortable feeding your pet live animals, then your best choice would be a pure herbivore such as an Iguana. If you don’t want a complicated tank set-up, then a Leopard Gecko would be a good choice for you.

If you consider all these tips and ensure you have a safe environment for both pet and owner, you shouldn’t have a problem having lizards as pets.If you have any questions regarding the availability and variety of iguanids, geckos, chameleons, and other lizards we carry, please give us a call at 954-967-8310.
